James Fell

@JAMESFELL
The first thing that you should know about James Fell is that he swears. A lot. He’s written for Time magazine, Men’s Health, NPR and the Guardian, and is the author of ‘The Holy Sh!t Moment: How Lasting Change Can Happen in an Instant’. But Covid-19 changed James Fell’s career arc: “On April 19th, 2020 I decided to write an “on this day” history piece and post it to my Facebook page. And it was popular, so the next day I did another. And that one was a lot more popular. So, I kept doing them and titled the daily column “On This Day in History, Sh!t Went Down” and in the first month there were over a million readers.”

Sweary History

Those who cannot remember the past . . . might have better recall with a history teacher who uses the word “fuck” a lot.

As it happens, I stumbled upon James Fell’s Facebook channel pretty early in the pandemic. I found his brutally honest & irreverent style refreshing & funny — especially during a time of lockdown stress, doomscrolling & the fake news cycle. So when I was approached to design a logo for James Fell’s new publication, ‘Sweary History’, I couldn’t believe my luck!

Being a regular reader of James Fell’s column, I immediately had a sense of the tone I wanted to capture with this design. Paradoxically irreverent and but also deeply invested with the real lives of people in history. So it was one of the quicker designs process, with almost no revision rounds to speak of.

It was also cool to find out that James is just as witty on a video call as he is in his daily column.
