Nagle describes the alt-right as a dangerous movement, but she also criticizes aspects of the left that have contributed to the alt-right’s rise, so when we started this project, I wasn’t immediately sure of what direction our design might take, but Angela had a strong sense of what she liked. She sent me a clipping of a lush turn-of-the-century wallpaper with botanical motifs. I borrowed from the essence of the wallpaper design and took out my wacom tablet to sketch out a lush jungle-like motif of my own. I completed the design by weaving in a gold art-deco frame to contain & stand in contrast to the lush leafy design. And I used a wholesome serif font.
Angela was wonderful to work with. She has a clear-eyed view on the political situation, and collaborating with her on this design, I aimed to visually capture the depth and richness of the jungle as a reflection on her fearless reporting, and her authenticity.
